What about this stuff? Looks to be perfect for a low price...

Designed for HV applications so should have no issue with our voltage range and rated for up to 180C. I think i'm going to order some.

Can this be used to insulate the Stator as well or is this just for securing the wires?

What are you guys using to insulate the stator?

Edit: Just ordered some. Hopefully it works out well! spec's look great

MG Chemicals 4226 Super Corona Dope High Voltage Insulating Varnish | eBay

I thought about trying some of that as well, I still haven't ordered any type of varnish for my Scorpion 4020-1350 motor, I've been gone so much lately working that my motor has taken a back burner for a while.
180 degree Celcius equal's 356 F, which would be awesome!
And if oils don't break it down I might try some of this. I like the price.
I saw where someone else used it on RcGroups but never said how they liked it or anything about it.

Very cool, I got some on the way and plan to use it to protect the stator and then secure the winds. I'll let you know how it goes.

It will be my first rewind though so I don't have much to compare it to.

I have the Super Corona Dope and it doesn't secure very well but it does seem to insulate well.

Ok cool, so it is good for insulating the stator?

Do you use Nomex paper or just that stuff?

Stator needs a much more durable coating than I think the 'dope would offer. It's not as durable as the polyimide (amide?) coating on the wire.

I'd love to find a source for the polyester reinforced nomex paper in small quantites but no luck with that so far so for Scorpion stators I'll continue to use my nomex paper. That said, I've done 3 700mx recently and the epoxy coating is on them is pretty darn tough and really makes winding (and even rewinding) much more enjoyable for me.

As far as securing wires, I've been practicing and using the method that self locks the wires into the roots of the slots. I need to figure out a similar trick to use on 8 pole motors now.

Ah ok, I may try the thinned JB weld for the stator then. The papers seem like a pain in the butt

I have bought this, and i don't have plenty experience but i think it is polyester reinforced:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/251514342093...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

And for the dope/epoxy - i didn't want to use it as well first mainly beacuse i didn't want heat insulation, but i understood the main reason is vibration causing friction wearing wires coating and eventually causing shorts. on the last 2 rewinds i did i had many "dangerous" spots like that so varnish was a must.

papers give you the thinnest layer of insulation, better than the epoxies. it will be hard to apply JB weld in the slots without loosing to much space. and they are not so bad is you find the correct adhesive to glue them in the slots.

but the fiberglass plates are a true pain in the b#$%t. i would use JB w there if it works well.

I have used a varnish i was given by one of the (AC) motor winders who is also giving me the wires. you can see it here

https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=666461

All the glare you see and between the wires is the varnish. i even baked it a little and it also cures well in heat, and secures the wires very well.

I will try and check the maker of this varnish and post my findings.

It's not. I forget the number but Nomex 410 is not the reinforced type. I'll have to look it up again...

Either way, I'm fairly certain that the reinforced stuff is what Scorpion uses...

Ok, I'll order some of the paper. Seems to make sense that it will better protect from vibrations.

5 mil, 10 mil, or 20 mil?

Ahhh now i understand what you mean. the paper i took off the 4020 was that kind indead. it has a layer of plastic-like on one side.

Anyway - The one i posted is very strong. although again - i haven't seen others.

5 mil, 10 mil, or 20 mil?
I believe as long as you are under the 1.5mm wire 5 mil is enough (0.12mm). it is a very strong stuff.

This Nomex paper is layered with one Nomex layer, one polyester and one Nomex.
I wonder if its stronger? http://www.brocott.co.uk/electrical-...pn212-200.html
the thinnest they have is .14mm = 5.51 Mil

That is the stuff I use, very strong and works really well.
