Default Building twin 800e birds

I've been a busy builder lately. Just finishing up a 700e DFC and now have two 800e DFC birds going at the same time. Below are links to the galleries. Here is a comparison of the 800e and 700e V2 canopies, and a picture of the tail cases showing the increased diameter. The bearings and other tail components (except blades) are the same as the 700e V2. The CF boom is almost twice as thick as past booms. The majority of the other parts are the same as the 700e V2.

Kudos to Align, the packaging for this bird was very different than past kits. Size does matter. This is the first canopy that was not cracked. The paint job is a little messy but overall, they did a nice job.

Will update daily.

Looking good, i guess the ultimate thing everybody here wants too see, and i think only you can show us at this stage, is a pic of the 800 side frame next to a 700 side frame on a table top so we can get an exact idea of size comparison..?

Yes, I will be doing some more comparison photos as I go along. At a quick glance, the 700e frame is a bit longer at the front near the skids, but the 800e frame is about one inch taller overall.

Your a lucky man building all these at once. Are both the 800's yours, one for 3d and one for aerial photography?

I know, I am fortunate to be able to build two of these at once. No, they are not mine. I'm building them for fellow heli pilots. But the fun part is going to be when I get to maiden them back to back... Both will be stock except for the Vbar FBL systems. Both unopened 3GX units are up for sale in the classifieds section.

I also added some photos to the << 800e DFC Trekker Build Gallery >>.

Below are a couple of comparisons between the 800e and 700e.

I think I am going to need a bigger table.

The two sets of frames were of very different quality. The frames on the 700e DFC were immaculate and I expected the same with the 800e but they were not even close. One set needed allot of sanding as the edges were a little ragged, and had a few gouges in the finish. And the other was quite a bit better but no where near the quality of the 700e DFC.

Can you count the teeth on the main gear that came with the 800E please? It's described as an 110T on some site and 112T on a few other.

Is the boom a plain carbon fiber or it's like the smaller 600/700 boom which is made out of aluminum with a thin coat of carbon fiber?

The main gear is 110T, verified by counting them. The manual states it as well. The CF boom has the same thin layer of carbon as the 700e but the aluminum is about twice as thick and quite heavy.

800e and 700e frame comaprison. The top components are the same, bearing block, elevator components, front receiver, main shaft, head, motor mount, servo locations, Battery rails line up. So I guess the 800e frame is not taller but deeper.

The ESC mounts are at different angles making the ESC a bit further away from the boom on the 800e.

The 800e tail boom will not bolt directly onto the 700e V2 tail boom mount. The 800e boom is larger in diameter. You would have to upgrade almost every component from the boom mount back. The 800e complete tail assembly (boom mount to tail case) is noticeably heavier than the 700e tail assembly as well.

Tail Boom Mount
Tail Boom
Torque Tube
Torque Tube Bearing Holders
Rudder Control Rod
Rudder Control Rod Support Hanger
Rear Tail Case (Torque Tube Unit)
Horizontal Stabilizer Belt

I added three additional for a total of 5. All but one are in the upper half of the frame.

Yes thanks, relise the larger boom dia, was thinking of cutting (length wise) 800 boom for a 700E, just to have the look of the larger dia boom. Sounds like it's doable if the Trekkers tail boom mount fits 700E frames.

Bill, the outside diameter of the 800e boom is 24.2mm, and the 700e boom is 21.4mm

JustinS, the 800e boom is 920ish mm long. I used a yard stick to measure. It will not fit the 700e boom mount, the 800e boom is 3mm larger in diameter.

One thing I'm not sure of is the clearance of the rudder servo horn. It is a tighter fit on the 700e V2 than the 800e.The tail boom mount has a different shape.

You would need to replace:

Tail Boom Mount (Front Case)
Tail Boom
Torque Tube Bearing Holders
Tail Control Guide
Torque Tube Unit (Rear Case)
Horizontal Stabilizer Belt

There are some more 800e build photos, 96 in total. The entire gallery can be seen here.

Weather permitting, I will be able to maiden both birds on Sunday. They didn't really seem that big until I put the canopy on one and WOW!

Finally got both birds done. Need to attach the tail and do the setups and they will be ready to go for their maiden flights tomorrow.
