Broken shaft on ufly stock motor
1st day with light wind in a while. Battery pack was about 30% and lost lift. I adjusted the pinion to main gear and changed battery packs. Lifted off and about 30 seconds into the 2nd pack lost power. Found the the shaft on the motor broken with the pinion sitting in the frame housing. Should mention:
Unusual wear on the pinion This motor is only a week old The purple frame is bent & needs to be replaced Any ideas or suggestions Thanks |

Wow, sorry to hear. Not much can be done with the motor other than replace it.
I do know the motor shaft has too be at a perfect right angle to the main gear and the purple main frame is part of that formula. The other part is the distance between the top of the front and rear landing gear and the bottom of the front and rear gear. What I do is measure the parting line at the center of the top of the landing gear front to rear and verify that measurement is the the same at the bottom of the gear. If it is not the purple mainframe will be bowed ether up or down, even a tiny bit will cause the pinion not to mesh with the main gear properly. To adjust it, loosen the little screws on the base of the landing gear where they hold the skids and move the gear fore or aft till they are perfectly parallel. Also make sure they are equil on both sides. Once the motor is installed verify it is at a perfect right angle to the main gear. When adjusting the mesh hold the motor still and move the main gear, you should see a little backlash between the pinion and main gear, not much, just a little slack. Adjust accordingly. Also the pinion will wear out, but not after a week so there is an adjustment problem. One other thing to check is the black plastic main frame, due too poor quality control the main frame may be warped and has to be replaced. To check that dismantle the entire landing gear, purple frame and all the stuff at the bottom of the copter. place the base of the frame on a known flat surface, a piece of glass or mirror will work and see how it sets. If you see space between the base of the frame at any of the corners the frame is warped and needs to be replaced or lapped flat. Hope this helps, sorry for being long winded. Steve |

some brushless motors have replaceable shafts but as cheap as they are now days you might as well replace it.....the motor on my foam plane has a replaceable shaft not sure about walkera tho....if it has the hex grub srew in the bottom of the can it can be replaced...all you need is a piece of 2mm shaft...perhaps a feathering shaft would work or a tail shaft without the blade hub on it...

Thanks Steve & Marty for the info. I've ordered a new purple frame. ( i'm pretty sure thats the problem) I have somebody local for parts but he's out of stock on the motors, so I'll just be waiting for the ups man.

I replace my purple frame with one I made from a carbon fiber ,I just copied my original frame onto the carbon fiber sheet and used a dremel tool to cut out,there's only 4 holes and two motor slots that need to be copied,the rest of the holes are optional.Carbon doesn't bend after crash or hard landing so there's less to fix!

I build fiberglass boats so I have alot of experience with carbon , kevlar,fiberglass,you use the same precautions for all!
