How big are the capacitors (in microfarads) for the HobbyWing 120A HV Pro? How many do I need? I might mod mine before using it just to be on the ultra-safe side. Cheap insurance.

Got my hobbywing 120 Pro esc installed and flying, LOVE it! It is very user friendly and easy to set up. The soft start is just as good as castles if not better. I am very pleased with it, and for the price I really dont think you can beat it. so far I have 20 flights on it. It was between a new CC 120 or the HW and am really impressed with it. A friend of mine had his CC 120 catch on fire and burn up his 700E frames yesterday....very disappointing. He is replacing it with a HW 120.

Glad to hear you like. I love mine on my 450 Pro. HW Platinums are great.

Hi guys; Where did you buy you HobbyWing in USA? My CC120 came down in a ball of fire yesterday and I'm needing a fast replacement.

Peace

The diameter is important to fit the solder pads and need to be radials. 25 mm long are just fine.. I got mine from Mouser at $1 a piece and 2 day shipping.

I don't understand why CC doesn't use 63v caps, since even high quality caps are very very cheap. Especially when we pay that much and they don't even give us higher rate caps? That is confusing, because I am thinking higher rate caps like 63v would fry other electronics on the board?

Long battery leads to the ESC, multiple connectors, widely spaced battery leads all cause higher inductance, greater induced voltages (ripple) with the rapid on/off conditions of these PWM motors shorten the life of these capacitors..

We could help a lot by shortening the overall battery lead lengths, reducing the # of connectors, adding more parallel caps close to the ESC for every 4" in excess of the ESC leads..Would this reduce the "flame" rates???

Why are people concerned about the caps being 50v when the max voltage on a 12s pack is 50.4?

Also to the original poster, the CCHV85 is one of the best controllers Castle has ever made. I have rarely if ever heard of any issues regarding them. It is also ready for all the firmware updates the ICE version of ESCs has. The only thing your missing is the data logging.

Electrolytics don't like over voltage.. A high ripple values can cause the induced voltages exceeding the battery voltages.. With 12s batteries, the margin is close.. That is the reason for the concerns.. look here

I don't see how the ripple voltage could be above the input voltage, it should always be a drop. Either way lipos don't hold 4.2 volts per cell under load. Even very expensive lipos will drop below 4 volts per cell.

Time will tell.. HW and CC both use 50v.. The engineers must think it is okay..

I'm thinking about doing this too but I just did a search on the net and it appears that there are just as many Hobbywing fires out there. What to do...what to do...
