Has anyone made a wooden compass swing stand yet?
We were discussing compass swings on multirotors at the field the other day and it got me wondering about how do-able it would be to knock something up out of wood or fibreglass, bearing in mind it would have to be metal free..... |

Here we go again!
After I got the compass swing successfully done last time, showed that all was good.
Powered it up one day to fly, and within 10-15 seconds of powering up the SK (720BE with ver 4.0), got the fast GPS error flash. Power sysled it again, same thing. After several attempts, hooked it up to the laptop and lo and behold, got the "Compass Sensor Failed" message. Went to the wizard to redo the compass swing, and now, still trying after dozens of tries. Im going to capture a flight log and send to Skookum to see if they can shed some light on things. The setup software shows between a .40-.45 level magnetic field strength which according to the documentation is in the acceptable range (if I recall correctly). At this point, the GPS module is liable to go flying without the heli. |

Setup shows 1.08 but I have noticed that if I try to reflash the GPS (with 1.08) i get a popup that says "Error updating GPS".
As soon as I posted the previous message, I went outside and tried the compass swing again, and it succeeded the second time. After letting it sit and power cycling it, I waited till it acquired satellites (which it did successfully after about 3-4 minutes), and repeated 4 times, and it successfully acquired the satelllites each time after 3-4 minutes. We will wait and see what happens. I have a vibration issue that I just posted vibe logs in another post. If I can ever get that ironed out, maybe I can fly it again and try out the self leveling and GPS modes. Cheers, Charlie |

This thread was exactly what I needed to finally get the unit to pass the calibration step.
Taking off the blades, stopping at the same direction that you started the compass swing, then transitioning smoothly to the pitch swing did it for me. Got it done in 2 attempts versus 20+ with the 'blades on" and transitioning to pitch directly after the lights changed to double blink. The video was good, but perhaps an updated one would be helpful. The SK720BE and GPS is simply stunning! Kudos to Art and his team for nailing and improving an already impressive flybarless controller. |

Don't just power up and pick up the heli and go. Wait for the flashing blue LED on the GPS unit to go solid, then start. Go very slow.....even slower than shown in the video, and you will likely hit the first time you try.

Although this is exactly what I do, I remember reading something that Art posted here to the effect that a satellite lock is not required for the GPS swing, and indeed has no bearing on the procedure. |

Yes, Art did recently say this is not the case. I was basing that info on old info that was shared amongst others back when the GPS was first released over a year ago and we were all learning the ropes.

Okay.
I am installing the SK-720BE plus SK-GPS on my Trex 600E. I was having problems getting the compass swing and I was getting mad. I saw this thread, and I discovered my problem: I use Quick UK magnetic canopy mounts. Two in the front and two in th back. The SK-GPS is mounted on a little standoff on the tailboom mount on the back of the heli. It is 145mm back from the main mast. It is about 70mm away from the closest servo or satellite receiver. And, it is about 55mm away from the rear magnet canopy mount. With the magnet canopy mount installed, the "Magnetic Field Strength" was around 2.5 and was highlighted in yellow. I figured the a yellow highlight was bad - but I didn't know what it was supposed to be. I removed the magnetic canopy mount, and the compass swing succeeded on the first try. I checked on the PC, and the Magnetic Field Strength was 0.51 and it showed GPS Status OK As soon as I moved the magnet back to its position, the Magnetic Field Strength went back up to 2.5 and the GPS Status changed to Stray Magnetism and the SK-GPS started a fast blink. I guess I will change back to the old school canopy mounts. However: The Compass Heading (true) is about -15° different from the compass app on my iPhone 4S. The SK-GPS says it is point at 300° Lining up the iPhone with the tailboom says 314° The Lat / Long is pretty close: SK-GPS iPhone Lat 37° 06.3' 37° 06' 16" Log 121° 38.5' 121° 38' 32" I'm not sure if this is a problem |

I can see that you're in San Jose, CA. The magnetic declination for that area is +13 degrees.
I wonder if that fact is contributing to your error. Maybe the SK-GPS or your Phone is compensating for that. |
