I am guessing a stationary flip is the simplest of 3D moves.
Is it actually considered 3D or not?
So if I put the link in only without the link surrounding youtube tags that will work fine?

Not 3D. Neither are funnels, rolls, loops, inverted flying.. all considered sport flying. Flips are very easy... hard to get them really smooth without an altitude change in real life though.

So where does the line get drawn? What differentiates 3D from 'sport' and other types of flying

Watch any 3D pilot and the pros. You will see them 'stir' the right stick in circles almost continually. Pirouetting maneuvers all the time.... in transitions, piro funnels, piroflips. Really hard.. for me anyway.. too me a full 4 years of flying before I could do a simple piroflip.

That is stirring the right stick in Mode 2? I have never found a definitive answer as to the best mode for 3D. I have a dx6i that has been dropped on concrete one too many times and am thinking of upping to a dx8 to try other modes before I become to accustomed to one type to make sure I am flying the mode for me.
is that a dumb idea?

Yes that video is mode 2.

Most everyone uses mode 2 for helis. Mode 1 came from the airplane side of things and hung on for a few people in helis. Flying 3D is going to be easier in mode 2. For airplanes, you would have rudder and elevator on the same stick... so you can basically fly with just one stick... something like that.

Here is a poll that was done on modes.

Your signature indicates you have a dx8. Do you recommend this over a battered dx6i (random yaw sometimes - can be scary). Also is there anywhere I can view recommendations on different online rc vendors? I have been using a mob called gonitrohobbies and they seem OK but would like to see the vendors rated somewhere.
Thanks for your help today it is much appreciated.

Ha! The DX6i feels just like a toy compared! Lovely radio. Back lit... ball bearing gimbals.. rubber grips. I just love it. I've had a DX6i and a DX7. No comparison. Not sure about Australia.. but best price is $289US at bigskyhobby.com (great shop) ... see about shipping.

+1 I have the DX8 for almost half a year now and the 6i really feels like a toy, the gimbal feel on the DX8 is super great and really helps thumbers. It is also pretty balanced on the neckstrap and menu arrangements are nothing like the DX6i, a lot better and more simple. Plus you cant beat updating it through the SD card or the backlight screen. There are so many advantages and the DX8 is worth every penny spent.

Here's a recent video of mine. I've only been flying for about a year and a half, and I got my first 450 heli early this fall.

Not sure how to attach the pxr files though, so I uploaded it to a file hosting service. Do most of you guys just use youtube? and how do you record the videos?

Here is a quick flight I put together.. Using the Whiplash. I crashed at the end. It was while spooling down on the ground, I moved my right stick to the left/right by accident. I love doing tic-tocs as well as flips and I may of overused them here but it turned out ok. This thing is best viewed at the stock flying field, it was recorded quite a while ago so I don't remember where exactly I did it. I'm unable to upload it here for some reason so download at the following link:

Well I have used Real Flight 6.5 for a year now and I got a copy of Phoenix and have been playing with it for a while now. I really like the Rave 90 so far it is my fav of the group. I have been trying to play with the setup for the Helicopters. Hope you like the flights.

Testing a new way to capture video, which looks quite allright There's no sound though, because the sim sounds are just so awful you'd wanna mute it anyway.

Yesterday brought the release of an official version of the Raptor 90 for the phoenix rc sim - which I think might be my new favorite.. also, as you probably can see, im not afraid to crash in the sim... If I fly for more than 5 minutes without a crash, something is very wrong

just checked out dxtory, man it's awesome. I'm using windows movie maker to compress the avi files. The rendering on dxtory is much better than fraps. Also noticed with fraps it tends to be a big cpu hog compared to dxtory. But it still creates a big file. Using window movie maker to compress the avi file.

Exactly. A lot of the screen capture programs tend to limit your maximum framerate as well and that's really bad. It's quite alright to use wmm to compress the files. I sacrifice a little cpu to compress on the fly with xsplit. Just instead of storing the dxtory files locally the frames are directly delivered to xsplit and treated there like any other camera input. This method is a must if you want to stream live to the cloud on twitch.tv or something. Anywho, I will try to make a vid where I don't crash...
