Default ENGINE STARTING PROBLEMS

This Saturday it was around 27F and I took my heli out in my backyard and she didn't want to start up! So I first checked to see if I was getting spark and I was!! So then I turn it over a little without the spark plug to get all the extra fuel out incase it was flooded! (which it was almost no fuel at all)..

Then I made sure I set the needles back to factory default and then I bumped up my idle a little which seem to help! I had the starter on it for almost 2 minutes straight spining and I could hear trying to start and it did finally!

After that I ran 3 tanks with no problem!

So today I took her out and it was around the same temp 27F and she started right up and flew great! As soon as I landed I refueled and try to start her up again but nothing!!!! I spent over an hour looking over everything and it still won't start...

So anyway I ordered a new carb, plugs, and I'll get a fresh gallon of gas! The gas I've been using is almost a month old...

You guys have any suggestions?

*Hanson 260RC
*Sunoco 87 pump gas
*Manhattan Oil Fuel Fragrance (It makes the gas smell better) Mixed at only 1/3 of an ounce to a gallon
*Klotz Super Techniplate Synthetic (w/20%castor) Mixed at 32:1
*Low Needle 1 3/8
*High Needle 1 1/2

I had this almost exact problem on a 1/5 scale Baja with an almost new G290RC. I checked everything and all was fine including a spark. The first thing I did was change to a new spark plug and VIOLA, the problem went away. The spark old spark plug was also very new, 2-3 tanks on it and it was sparking but I noticed the spark was not so bright. Lesson learned for me was even with a spark on a non starting engine, try a new spark plug.

Cold temps require a richer mixture to get it to start. You can warm the engine with a heat source, or use the choke more (if no choke, you may need to squirt a SMALL amount of fuel into the intake.

Once warm, it should start as normal.

I just found out why it wasn't starting! I was using Koltz oil with castor and it made my ring stick in it's groove...

Never use oil with castor in it kids!! Even when the Klotz quart bottle says it can be mixed and used in gasoline engines..

I think i'm going to sue them..

Why not? Did it not mix with gasoline? How much did you use?

Castor oil was used in racing and aircraft engines for many years.

Hi Pinecone,

Well the engine is fairly new, I broke it in using Stihl oil at 25:1 ratio for a gallon then I switch it over to Klotz!

Before I used the Klotz I took off my pipe to check my ring and piston! The top had some carbon but the sides where super clean no carbon at all..

I mixed the Klotz at 32:1 and it mixed with the gas with no problems! I didn't even get through a 1/2 gallon of gas when the ring started sticking..

You can check my other thread (Does This Look Normal) I have pics of the gummy mess it left on the exhaust side of the piston...

Toxic Al said the castor is very dirty and it can lead to rings sticking and stop using it..

In full on race engines(moto x, snowmobile etc.) the exhaust temp is much hotter then we see in these engines. The castor oil as a lubricant is excellent but can and has gummed up powervalves and stuck ring from the build up. I would stick with a good synthetic oil and it should not be a problem. Peace, Al

Not disagreeing that using a full synthetic is MUCH better.

Just commenting on the threat to sue Klotz for using castor in one of these engines.
