RC Heli 3d History?

Just curious if there is any information out there as to the history of what we do? I cant imagine 3d happened over night, who were the pioneers, first to decide to fly inverted or what early pilots invented maneuvers. One that deserves praise is the guy who came up with the piro flip, I mean how does a maneuver like that come about?

interesting subject. an article or even book about how, when and where manuevers were invented and by who would be most interesting. i beats me how anyone thought up a piro flip in the first place. that stiring motion is not exactly obvious even when you know its possible. but imagine never having seen one and then doing one! im thinking it must have evolved over time from more simple beginnings rather than someone inventing perfect double piro flips one day from scratch. and as it must have been quite a long time ago, was it invented before the advent of sims? it would be interesting to know the thought processes involved

Mike Mas was also very instrumental in early pre 3D flight...Pretty sure he was first actual RC heli pilot to go inverted...

From what I've read, Mike Mas was not the first to go inverted but: He was the first to go "switchless inverted" and with that taking the insight needed to a new level.

The pre-requisite for 3D was the pitch-throttle curve to do so ..

IMO Mike Maas is the creator of 3D helicopter set-up with his first 3D-flight (inverted) back in the late seventies (1978).

The first one to make use of the 3D-setup and to push this new style might be CY ..

I guess both of them belong to the hall-of-fame of rc-helicopters having flight-skills, mechanical-insights and outstanding charisma. Meanwhie today's famous pilots seem to be more mainstream and promoting almost everything (for a mainstream mass) ..

Dieter Schluter.

He pioneered Bell/Hiller head mixing. Right up to the point where the FBL revolution started taking over recently, many modern head designs still used his type of Bell/Hiller mixing.

The Heliboy was the first, powerful and aggressive model helicopter on the market.

While there was no 3D then (late 1970's), helicopter aerobatics were changed forever.

I think Mike Mas was the first to master switchless inverted.

I think for actual 3D, Curtis Youngblood is probably the one.

Here's where it seemed to all begin. Not 3d flying, so I'm a bit off topic, but RC heli's in general. Full size even, for that matter. Way before Schluter's time, he was only 10 years old at this time.

I normally don't do this but I posted this awhile back and it didn't seem to get much love. Perhaps this crowd will appreciate the history of it a bit more?


I was flipping through a recent issue of Smithsonian Air & Space magazine and came across an article on the Bell 47 which was the iconic MASH heli and recipient of the worlds first commercial helicopter certificate. I found this picture of the inventor Arthur Young, aka AMY, standing and facing the camera demonstrating his machine.



I thought this guy reminds me of some of the knuckleheads that fly RC heli's! I started reading up on him. He was a mathematician, engineer and philosopher. The inventor of the stabilizer bar which fundamentally made rotary wing flight possible. Still his work on helicopters was a small part of his life's story taking up less than 20 years. He went on to the field of philosophy for the remainder of his life. Here's a couple of links to him that I thought those with an interest in history might enjoy. He was a remarkable man. Knowing what I've learned about him almost makes me sad that his fly bar is becoming a relic. Still I think he'd enjoy seeing what has become of his models!

What about Cliff Hyatt, Bob sims, Ernie Huber, John Goram, etc. There were a lot of guys that played a big role in the development of the R/C Heli. Guess you can tell I am an old Fart!
