Default Buddy-Box Question

I bought a trainer cord so I could connect 2 DX6i's and let my kids try to fly without worry to my poor heli, but I can't seem to make it work. I tried setting all the settings the same on the transmitters, but still no-go.

Does anyone have some good directions on how to setup the TX's for buddy-box operation? Thanks!

JP

Both tx's need the same settings for throttle curve etc. Turn your tx on, plug the cable in, then plug the other end of the cable in your kid's tx without turning on your kid's tx. That way, the kid's tx will not enable the rf pack.

Ok I tried doing the buddy box thing with Guzziman last monday.
What I did was copy all the settings from his radio to a new model on my radio.
Hooked up the trainer cable from his to mine. He hit the trainer switch and I had control of the heli.

The plan was for him to hit the trainer switch when he got into trouble. It didn't work very well, because by the time I had been given control, there was no time to gain control. I also think his elevator servo had failed, as there was no elevator control.

Looking back, I think the way we should have done it was I should have had the master control and hold the switch giving him control and taking control when I could see he was in trouble. I say this because I could see he was in trouble well before he knew he was and reacted to give me control.

One important note is that the instructor needs to adjust his collective and cyclic as the pilot is flying, otherwise when you do take control the heli reads the positions of the instructors radio and sets it to that. So if there is 0 collective, the heli is going to drop.

Hope you can learn from our mistake with the buddy system.

In the end though, there might not be much that can be done to prevent the crash, seeing how quickly things happen with helis.

That's the way I had envisioned it to work...me having my finger on the trainer switch giving control to the other TX and when I see they're in trouble, I take my finger off and I have control again.

So when do I plug the trainer cord into the other TX? Should I plug the battery into the heli, turn on my radio then plug in the trainer cable to mine then the other transmitter?

Thanks for the quick replies!

I am still unable to make this work. I have copied the settings of my TX into my friend's TX....they are they same, with the exception of model name...do they need to be the same too???

I plug into the battery into the heil, then turn my TX on. After the ESC chirps, I plug the triner cord into my TX and then plug the other end into my friends TX (which is off).

Can anyone tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
JP

What doesn't work? When you plug the cable into his power'd off tx, does his tx turn on? What radios?

I finally figured it out....either I ordered the wrong cord or they sent me the wrong cord. I grabbed a stereo head phone cable and it worked like a charm!

Does anyone know if the buddy box setup will work between a DX6i and the DX7? I want to try this out in the gym tonight!

Also anyone who has done this.. do only T/P curves need to match? You don't have to match swash and all those settings for the dummy non-transmitting radio do you?

Buddy Boxing , being the instructor, is a VERY DIFFICULT thing to do. I flat out refuse to do it. I have been asked numerous times to do it at the club and I tell all of them no. 90% of the time you will not have enough time to recover. As the instructor you need to be "Flying" the heli as well as the student.

And yes, you can buddy box a DX7 and a DX6i. You can buddy box any JR/Spektrum radio with another one.

Well.. I did it last night.. but only with an MCX.. worked very nicely. My main roll will be to hold the switch while my brother does his iniital hovering... and he starts to drift and feel panicky I have my radio at 75% stick and let go the button and recover. I see why doing crazy things would be very difficult to recover from.. but I see this good to build confidence in hovering.. especially nose in. He's very good in the sim but just gets panicky with the real thing.. so more of a crutch til he gets over the first few batteries.
